Learn About Drinking Horns

We believe in educating about Viking culture. Below we will share the meaning behind drinking horns — the stories, ideas, and mythology — as well as the Heritage — where we clarify what is historically accurate or a modern interpretation.

Meaning

For Celebration and Community

Drinking horns were symbols of status, community, and connection to the gods. They were used in feasts and rituals alike. They are also associated with the hospitality and bonds between warriors that Vikings are known for. As part of religious ceremonies, battle celebrations, mythological stories, and community gatherings, the drinking horn holds a special place in Viking culture.

Heritage

For Mead Lovers and Valiant Warriors

Drinking horns were indeed used in the Viking Age as proven through artifacts collected by archaeologists, including some with inscriptions and engraved designs. Found in Viking longhouses, drinking horns were clearly a significant element of celebrations. It is said that they were designed as horns so that they couldn't be placed down until all the mead had been drunk or else it would spill.

Consider a drinking horn for yourself whether you enjoy mead, wine, or otherwise, or grab yourself a Norse inspired mug from our collection.

The Meaning Behind “Vikheim

The name Vikheim came to us after deeply exploring what kind of impact we wanted to make in this space. There are many websites and shops focused on Vikings, and we wanted to bring a unique angle. We knew part of this was helping others understand Viking heritage and the stories and meaning within Norse mythology. The purpose was to help others find connection.

Where do people feel they are when they do find a deep, innate connection? Home. The word “Heim” in Old Norse means Home. Merging that into the word “Viking”, we found our name, as the home of Viking, Vikheim.
